Hi friends. As some of you know I spent a few months in Mexico City during the past couple years. In 2022 I was lucky to rent a beautiful, art-filled “casita” in Roma Norte that connected me to some amazing people and cultural moments of 20th century Mexico. I returned this spring to explore these histories against the backdrop of a changing city, and to think about what home and belonging mean to me. I wrote about this for Alta Journal’s fall “Writers” issue, working with the wonderful @marymeltonla , and if you subscribe to @altajournal you can read the piece accompanied by photographs by Mexico City-based @alecegarra who took the first image of my landlady, Janet Ruiz. Huge congratulations to Jodi Wille @jodiwille and the members of Unarius @unarius33 on yesterday’s triumphant screening of WELCOME SPACE BROTHERS @welcomespacebrothers with @womenundertheinfluence at the Los Angeles theater downtown—a fittingly spectacular venue for this visionary labor of love. Jodi is a longtime dear friend, and I’ve watched the story of this creative collective guided by their leader, Uriel, plus a host of channeled interplanetary beings, evolve over eight years through a documentary short and several exhibitions of the group’s art, costumes, and “psychodrama” films, plus multiple versions of the full-length documentary. Seeing the Unariuns in person, climbing out of their “Space Cad” in a stream of satin and gold lame, sculptural headdresses, wigs and glitter, evokes laughter and delight. But beneath the wild get-ups, intense interpersonal dynamics, and an anticipated alien landing that still hasn’t happened (yet!), Jodi uncovers the group’s deeper story of healing through creative expression, and powerfully conveys the esoteric teachings of soul evolution that underpin their projects. The Unariuns may call upon the space brothers, but their true strength lies in their vulnerable humanity, brought to moving and shimmering life by the only person who could have made this film. Thanks for this gift, Jodi Wille. ✨🛸💗

Thank you @laurenmetropolis @scenes_of_a_human_explorer @metabolicstudio for a great visit to the @bendingtheriver site yesterday. It was incredible to see the river post-Hilary, which left mountains of sand and stones (and shopping carts), and bent the steel barriers Metabolic Studio put up. Next: moving the water to the LA State Historic Park via the “Motherwell.” I’ll be doing a follow-up piece for @redcanarymagazine with the details. Was it all a dream? The evening before I flew out

Was it all a dream? The evening before I flew out of Barcelona I visited the Dalí Museum @dalimuseum in Figueres, which I had been to once before, decades earlier, as a young fan of Surrealism. But this time I looked at the museum with fresh eyes, knowing how intimately involved @stevenarnoldarchive had been in its creation in the early 1970s (it opened in 1974), as a protégé and collaborator of the maestro. I especially felt Steven’s hand—and eye—in the gold mannequins in the interior courtyard, and I even noticed similarities in his and Dalí’s style of illustration. I’m pretty sure the loaves of Catalan “bread” dotting the museum’s exterior were all Dalí, and I know the egg was meaningful to him as a symbol of hope and rebirth. In the last photo I’m standing across the water from Dalí’s house in Port Lligat, and if you look closely you can see eggs on the roof there, too. Bonjour from Ceret, France, where everything is tres charmant! I’m visiting my dear old friend Christine (not on IG) and her adopted son Oscar, who I’m meeting for the first time. Ceret is in the Pyrenees close to the Spanish border, and apparently Picasso lived for three summers in the white house behind the small cypress tree in the last photo, which is the view from an upper balcony. Life is slower here, and the seafood and vin bio are plentiful. Bisous!🌞💙

Some news: I won my first-ever journalism award! T

Some news: I won my first-ever journalism award! The Society of Professional Journalists @spj_pics gave my Red Canary Magazine piece, “The Art of Reparation,” about the artist Lauren Bon and the LA River, the Sigma Delta Chi award in the category of feature reporting in a publication with circulation under 40k! I didn’t even know my editor Joe Donnelly had submitted the piece for consideration, so I was completely surprised to receive his text yesterday. I’m in great company with most of the major national media outlets and some fine regional publications, but I think @redcanarymagazine is the only one repping the online environmental and social justice category. Yay, us! Thank you @joedonnellywrites for being a brilliant and supportive editor as always, and @laurenmetropolis @metabolicstudio for your inspiring vision(s). This was and is the kind of piece that makes it all worth it. 🙏🎉
